ESTIEM

Summer Academy

,,The mission of Summer Academy is to potentiate the development of leadership skills, foster the sharing of insights and knowledge within the industrial Engineering field and create a unique and strong relationship between all participants

What does a Summer Academy Event concretely look like ?

During a Summer Academy event we aim to bring a group of 8-16 students together in a a house, in a remote area to engage in open discussion, group work, debate and private study under the guidance of a senior Academic Leader. During a period of one to two weeks, the students deepen their self-awareness while receiving education in relevant topics for Industrial Engineering and Management . One of the most unique characteristics of Summer Academy events are the tight bonds formed between the participants, due to the environment of sharing and deep, focused learning.

Summer Academy surprises its participants with its feeling of peace, trust and silence. Participants may expect deeper self-awareness, self-growth and life-long friendships.

FAQ

An Academic Leader is a professional; usually a professor in the IEM field, or a professional in the personal development field such as an executive coach, a psychologist, etc. To put it in simple words, an Academic Leader is a leader of positive change, someone who inspires the participants of Summer Academy events to change their perspective ,widen their horizons and make a bigger impact on their lives and that of people that surround them

  • Summer Academy events  are open for all students of IEM studies who are members of the ESTIEM network

For years, it was tradition within ESTIEM to organise Summer Academy AKA ESTIEM’s treasure, in summertime. Hence the name Summer Academy.

In the spirit of #AimingHigh, which is a core value for us ESTIEMers, recent years’ Summer Academy leaders had the ambition of expanding the value proposition of this life changing event to hopefully make it accessible for ESTIEMers throughout the year in 4 editions: Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring Academies!

Yet the service still keeps the legacy of the name in its logo and calls itself Summer Academy. Which fits the event concept like a glove as participants can consider the academies as a temporary “summer vacation” from their “everyday obligations”. A very special vacation, where they can develop personally as well as professionally, as they get to:

  • Gain more self-awareness, realise what are their strengths, weaknesses and learning opportunities.
  • Acquire leadership skills, wisdom and knowledge from an expert Academic Leader.
  • Have fun and create unique bonds on a deeper level with other fellow ESTIEMers.

You can contact the Summer Academy central leader via leader.sac@estiem.org and all the necessary information for your application shall be communicated to you.

History

How it all started thanks to one man ?

Jim Platts, who has been course director for the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos and Examiner for the  Manufacturing Leaders’ Programme at the University of Cambridge is a Member of the Institution of Civil  Engineers, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce (founded 1754) and a  Quaker and teaches within this tradition. His teaching of Manufacturing Engineering at the University of  Cambridge is based on one-to-one guidance given in context whilst working – a continuation of the  close, empathic relationship between masters and apprentices used throughout history to teach  creativity. Beyond this, the Quaker approach is based on intensely focused group master classes, where  the skills of deep insight and powerfully facilitative leadership are grown. Jim Platts has been the Academic Leader of many Summer Academies since the beginning of this project in 2001. Ever since he was really enthusiastic about Summer Academy and the unique atmosphere during these two weeks. His approach for leadership depends on a deep understanding of life as much as on reflection as a group.

Dear Jim, thank you for everything!
